IoT and Conversational UX


As per Gartner, by 2018, 30% of all interaction with technology will happen through conversation. Also, overall 50% of the searches will be voice searches by 2020. Voice technology has made major progress in last 30 months.

Conversational user experience is a new way of interacting with machines. It’s a smart way of to have a conversation with a business or service through an automated interface. Due to the exchange of messages back and forth the machine also learns from what one is saying over a period. The whole system is a complex one with Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence capabilities.

There are three types of conversational user experiences:

  • Voice Application
  • Chatbot
  • SMS bot

Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Siri, Cortana, Watson are some of the popular platforms that are redefining voice-driven interactions for mobile and IoT solutions.

Amazon Alexa:

Amazon introduced Alexa as cloud-based voice service and it can support number of devices. Using Alexa, one can build natural voice-based experiences for customers to interact with technology. One can add new skill, capability using Alexa Skills Kit (ASK). With Alexa Voice Service (AVS) integrate smart cameras, entertainment system, lights etc. and bring convenience of hands-free voice control to any connected device.

Google Home:

With Google Home speaker user can interact with various services through Google Assistant using voice commands. User can listen to music, control video or photo, news & weather update entirely by voice

IBM Watson:

Watson is a question answering computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language. IBM has also provided Watson SDKs for mobile platforms such as Android and IoT.

Microsoft Cortana:

Microsoft’s Cortana has offered conversational interfaces for enterprises which are also available to mobile developers via the Windows 10 developer tools.

Apple Siri:

It’s an intelligent personal assistant & available for iOS, macOS, watchOS,  and tvOS operating systems. Siri uses voice queries and a natural language user interface to answer questions, perform action and make recommendations. Returned results are individualized. The software is capable to adapt users’ individual style of language usages, searches, and preferences, with continuing use.
